Aims of the Programme

The overall aim of the programme is to provide accounting and business education that develops accounting personnel with the requisite technical knowledge, skills, character and abilities fit for prudent stewardship of resources in the private and public sectors of the economy. Graduates of the programme are expected to fill middle-level management positions in both public and private institutions. Also, graduates of the programme are expected to have the requisite technical to qualify as trainee accountants with the recognized professional accounting bodies in Ghana and internationally.

Objectives of the Programme

Graduates of the Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) programme will:

a. be equipped with the requisite technical knowledge in accounting and the skills, character and competencies required for the prudent management of organizational resources.

b. be able to prepare and present financial reports in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards, and the institutional, legal and regulatory framework of Ghana.

c. be provided with opportunities for career development and advancement in the field of accountancy d. develop an entrepreneurial mind-set for success in their chosen career paths.

Entry Requirements for Admission of Students

The modes of entry into the Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) programme are below

• Holders of West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) must obtain passes in English, core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies. Candidates must also have credit passes in any three (3) elective subjects including Financial Accounting. An applicant’s aggregate should not exceed 36.

• Holders of Senior High School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) must obtain passes in core English, core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies. Candidates must also have credit passes in any three (3) elective subjects including Financial Accounting. The applicant’s aggregate should be 24 or better.

• Professional/Business Examination Certificate Holders: Candidates with Part I of the following Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants also qualify

• Mature Candidates: Candidates who are at least 25 years at the time of application and have credit passes in English and Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ level or WASSCE, are eligible to apply. Candidates will be required to pass an entrance examination, which consists of a General Paper and a Special Paper covering Management and Economics. Candidates who pass the entrance examination will be interviewed. Successful candidates will be admitted.

• Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accountancy holders with at least Second Class (Upper Division) are eligible. Candidates with Diploma in Accounting awarded by a recognized University are also eligible. Candidates under this category will be admitted to commence the programme at Level 300.
